Fibromyalgia is one of the most miserable
diseases known to mankind. It is a chronic disease process that causes lifelong
widespread body pain and tenderness in the over six million individuals in the United States who suffer with it. In fact, chronic widespread
musculoskeletal pain, as a whole, afflicts over thirty million Americans. While
such pain does not shorten life, it gradually destroys one’s being through the
despair the pain imposes and the adverse impact it has on function. The anguish
of chronic pain from fibromyalgia and other rheumatic diseases is magnified by
the fact that treatment is frequently, if not invariably, ineffective or
incomplete. Why? Because the assessment of fibromyalgia and other chronic widespread
musculoskeletal pain is complex and requires significantly more time,
attention, expert knowledge, and understanding than is usually available in
standard assessments. Usually, nobody identifies where such pain even comes
from. Thus, treatment programs are limited and inadequate.
At the Fibromyalgia Polypain Arthritis Center, we take the time to listen, look, and learn. To
provide thorough detailed, comprehensive, and personalized assessments that are
not limited by time or lack of understanding, but rather, directed by the very
specific physical, psychological, functional, and social circumstances of the
individual. We don’t rush you. We
talk to you. We listen to you. We thoroughly examine you. By peeling back the
layers of pain, we strive to identify where the pain comes from in fibromyalgia
or other conditions of chronic musculoskeletal pain, the mechanism by which it
evolves, and how it is modulated. We
endeavor to demystify fibromyalgia and chronic widespread pain and provide new
insights and understandings into the body and how it works in the context of
chronic pain.
Our intensive assessments provide an original
synthesis and integration of medical history and physical examination into
cause-based solutions to fibromyalgia and chronic widespread pain. We devote
the time necessary to fully explain the findings and answer all questions to
fully enlighten and empower those impacted by fibromyalgia and chronic
widespread pain with an integrated blend of traditional and complementary
strategies in an individualized wellness recovery program. Elements we address
include the cause of the pain, the factors that modulate it, and making
everything that is unknown about the relationships between pain and tenderness
to disability, sleep, weight related issues, psychological and psychosocial
disturbances, and sexual difficulties clear, understandable, and treatable. We
make every effort to provide the substrate of truly justified hope and faith in
the ability of individuals to transcend the suffering of fibromyalgia and
chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain to make positive changes in their
health and overall well-being.
